If you are a person or business conducting trade or providing services within various Alabama city limits, you may be required to renew your business license by January 31, 2021 in order to avoid penalties. We have compiled a list of several Alabama cities and their requirements for you. Most of these licenses cover a period of one year but we encourage you to review your specific city’s requirements before the end of the month.
City of Birmingham
Any person or entity desiring to conduct trade or provide services within the city limits of Birmingham is required to register with the City of Birmingham. The license covers the period of January 1 through December 31. The license must be renewed annually by February 15 to avoid penalties.
New business licenses may be applied for in one of two ways:
1) Using the online web portal provided by the City’s tax and licensing vendor, Avenue Insights & Analytics, or 2) applying in person, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the office of the Tax and License Administration (Revenue) Division located on the first floor of City Hall, Room TL-100, 710 North 20th Street, Birmingham, AL 35203.
To renew your City of Birmingham business license, you must use the online web portal provided by the City’s tax and licensing vendor, Avenue Insights & Analytics.

The City of Gadsden Revenue Department issues business licenses, which are required for any person or organization conducting business in Gadsden, Alabama. The license covers the period of January 1 through December 31. The license must be renewed annually by January 31 to avoid penalties.

A business license is required for commercial and residential-based businesses operating in the City of Huntsville. The license covers the period of January 1 through December 31. The license must be renewed annually by January 31 to avoid penalties.
