BMSS Advisors & CPAs would like to recognize all of the efforts and contributions that Steve gave to BMSS over the past 28 years.
Steve joined BMSS in 1994 and has over 40 years of public accounting experience. After graduating with his bachelor’s degree in accounting and then with his Juris Doctor from the University of Alabama Law School, Steve began his career by working in the tax department of Coopers & Lybrand in Birmingham. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1983 after satisfying the work requirement for his license.
As a senior member of the BMSS tax department, Steve managed the tax quality control process for the firm across all five offices. While working with clients in many industries, he predominantly focused on the technical tax needs of S corporations and partnership taxation with an emphasis on transactional work and the life cycle of a business. Over the years, Steve has assisted clients with their IRS issues as well, assisting them through examinations, administrative appeals and collection matters.
During his tenure at BMSS, Steve helped countless clients and employees alike and has a passion for furthering the accounting profession. Steve has served as board member, chair and president of professional organizations, including the Birmingham Tax Forum and the Federal Tax Clinic. In October, he began serving a four-year term as a member of the Alabama State Board of Public Accountancy. His sense of humor and willingness to help will be greatly missed by all at BMSS.
“When we first started the firm, we needed someone who shared our values to help us develop the tax area and Steve was the perfect person for the job,” said BMSS Managing Member Don Murphy.
“He joined in 1994 and built a great tax department from the ground up. Over the years, he helped develop and train the staff, led the quality control team for the tax department, and has been a vital part of the firm’s growth and development. Now that he is retiring, he will be greatly missed around the office, but we wish him all the best as he embarks on this new phase of life.”
Steve has been married to Robin for 42 years and they have three daughters, two granddaughters, one dog and four grand-dogs. When asked about retirement, Steve commented that he’s looking forward to experiencing a spring season without the craziness of tax deadlines and he’s looking forward to spending more time with family and friends.
