October is almost here, marking the start of the Alabama State and County Business Privilege license season.

What is a Business Privilege License?

Business Privilege Licenses are exactly what they sound like: licenses for the privilege of doing business in a particular locality. In Alabama, they are required for every person, firm, company, or corporation engaged in business in the state of Alabama.

State and county licenses are issued by the county Probate Judge or License Commissioner in the county where the business is located. This license covers the period of October 1 through September 30, and must be renewed annually by October 31st to avoid penalties. Fees to obtain a business license vary dependent upon the type of license required, and, in some cases, upon the population of the area where the business is located or upon the volume of business.

What should I do right now?

These renewals are due at the end of October, so keep an eye on your incoming mail for the renewal notice. Some counties may even have a portal for online license renewal.
