BMSS Advisors & CPAs will begin processing extensions for calendar, year-end federal information returns (Form 990, Form 990-EZ, and Form 990-PF) in March 2026. Our firm policy is to file an extension of time to file your returns, which can provide certain procedural advantages should a superseding return become warranted. We will still work to complete your return by the original due date assuming you are able to provide us the information necessary to complete your return no later than 28 days before the return’s due date.

As part of the extension process, we want to make you aware that the IRS no longer accepts paper checks for payments accompanying nonprofit tax returns or extensions. All nonprofit organizations, including private foundations, must pay any federal tax due electronically through the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS). Paper checks sent to the IRS from nonprofit organizations will not be accepted.

EFTPS is a secure, no-cost online and phone system administered by the U.S. Treasury for making federal tax payments electronically. It allows you to:

  • Schedule payments in advance (up to 365 days ahead)
  • Track payment history and confirmation numbers
  • Make recurring or one-off federal tax payments electronically

Because the IRS no longer accepts paper checks from nonprofit organizations, EFTPS will be the required payment method for most nonprofit tax payments, including those associated with extensions.

To enroll:

  1. Visit the official EFTPS website:
Go to https://www.eftps.gov/ and click “Enroll”.
  2. Select your entity type:
Choose Business (even for nonprofit entities) and enter your EIN (Employer Identification Number).
  3. Enter required information:
    • Legal name and address as registered with the IRS
    • Primary contact information
    • U.S. bank account routing and account numbers (this is where funds will be debited).
  4. Submit the enrollment. The system will validate the information with IRS records.
  5. Receive your EFTPS PIN:
After enrollment is submitted, the Treasury mails you a Personal Identification Number (PIN), typically within 5–7 business days.
  6. Activate your account:
Once the PIN arrives, log in at EFTPS.gov with your EIN and PIN to create your internet password. This completes your enrollment so you can begin scheduling and making payments.

Please allow several weeks before the May 15 tax deadline for EFTPS enrollment.

Since your PIN and activation materials are mailed, you must start the process well ahead of due dates to ensure you are able to make payments by the deadline. We recommend starting the process at least 3–4 weeks before a major filing or payment deadline to accommodate mailing delays and setup time.

If you do not receive your PIN in time, you can contact EFTPS Customer Service or arrange a payment by phone (scheduled at least one day before the due date), but early enrollment avoids these complications.
