What is E-Verify? E-Verify is an Internet-based system that allows employers to confirm newly hired employees are legally authorized to work in the United States. The E-Verify system compares information from Form I-9 to records available to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Is my business required to participate in it? All U.S. employers are required to verify the employment eligibility of each employee hired by completing Form I-9, and Alabama employers with one or more employees working in Alabama must use the E-Verify system to process the information provided in this form. There is no cost to participate in E-Verify.

How does my business enroll in E-Verify? Alabama businesses with less than 25 employees can enroll through the Alabama Employer Agent Service, at https://verify.alabama.gov/Login/Index?ReturnUrl=%2f  or by calling 1-855-VERIFY-6. Businesses with 25 or more employees must use the Federal E-Verify system at www.uscis.gov/everify.

Are there any additional requirements? Once a business is enrolled and using E-Verify, employers must clearly display the “Notice of E-Verify Participation” and “Right to Work” posters in all languages supplied by the Department of Homeland Security.

Are there training resources available for my company? Yes, the Federal E-Verify website offers many webinars and training guides for employers and employees. These can be accessed at https://www.uscis.gov/e-verify/e-verify-webinars/take-free-webinar.
