John Shank and his wife, Eva, have three children - Jeremy, Sarah, and Kathleen. He is a 1985 graduate of Huntingdon College, where he graduated with honors. He is a member of and is actively involved at Covenant Presbyterian Church.
John is a founding Member of Barfield, Murphy, Shank & Smith and is primarily responsible for managing the firm's human resource and personnel issues.
He leads our Not-For-Profit, Governmental, and Employee Benefit Plan practice groups along with coordinating clients' accounting and business needs in industries ranging from manufacturing, services, and technology. As a CVA, John performs business valuation services which are commonly required in conjunction with the purchase or sale of a business, succession planning, estate and gift taxes, and initial public offerings.
John is Past Chair of the Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants (ASCPA). Prior to being elected to the state council, he held the offices of president, vice-president and treasurer of the Birmingham Chapter of the ASCPA. John is a board member of the Birmingham Venture Club, treasurer of the Birmingham Boys Choir Foundation, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Birmingham Business Alliance. He previously served as Corporate Chair of the Arthritis Foundation Jingle Bell Run, as a member of the UAB Accounting Advisory board, Huntingdon College Alumni Board, and a past volunteer with National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
John Shank has been awarded "Who's Who in Law and Accounting" and "Top 40 Under 40" by the Birmingham Business Journal. He frequently speaks on accounting and auditing topics to not-for-profits and businesses.
