AICPA Public Service Award

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) awarded Barfield, Murphy, Shank & Smith (BMSS) the 2009 Public Service Award for Firms for its commitment to the community.

The AICPA honors one firm throughout the United States that has demonstrated outstanding public service activities with this annual award.

John Shank, one of BMSS’s founding shareholders, accepted the award at the AICPA Spring Council meeting.

“Over the years, many opportunities have presented themselves to us and it just seems right to give back to our community” John Shank says. “On a practical level, many of the initiatives and events we’ve supported have helped to bring camaraderie amongst our people. This spirit of giving back has become second nature to our people and for that we are thankful.”

Since Barfield, Murphy, Shank & was founded in 1991, the firm has served in pivotal roles in helping non-profits throughout Birmingham.  BMSS began working with Habitat for Humanity in 2000 and has donated more than 800 hours to provide families the opportunity to become homeowners in the Greater Birmingham area.

BMSS actively participates in activities to help the Linda Nolen Learning Center, the Arthritis Foundation, the American Red Cross, and has provided student scholarships through the Holy Family High School Cristo Rey Network.

Employees also receive three paid days a year to engage in personal volunteer efforts.
